Retire Number 17

LAD 3, NYM 2 - Fire Jerry M.?

May 19th, 2009 by JG

Good job Ryan Church, no seriously.  Good job buddy.   I don’t give a shit if Milledge is in AAA for Washington and pissing everyone off, that trade looks worse and worse every day.   It’s amazing how sloppy the Mets are actually capable of playing, I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything like it.

Long story short, within a few weeks from now there is going to be a lot of shouting for Jerry’s head.   I personally think Omar Minaya is just as much at fault for building another team with no back-up plan, but the manager always takes the fall first.   Regarding Jerry, the dude can motivate the team sure, and everyone likes the Sammy L. Jackson attitude in the post-games.  This is why he is/was such a great bench coach.  As a tactical manager, he is one of the worst and is making Willie Randolph look like Tony LaRussa.

I feel like every positional switch he makes depends on a flip of the coin, and some of them are mind-blowingly bad.    I’m not sure if he’s trying to light a fire under Murphy’s ass, but at this point he’s setting him up for a major slump and a trade to Baltimore.  If the Mets are supposedly looking at him as an option for 1B next year, then why isn’t he playing there?  Jeremy Reed is best used as a white Endy Chavez - 4th outfielder who gets the occasional start, but is best served off the bench for some speed on the bases and in the field.    Most players are going to look fine at 1b until the shit hits the fan, which is how the game ended.    Knowing Delgado is 38 and if not injury prone, should not be playing every day, there should be a backup 1B on the team.   Unfortunately these are the Mets, and so it goes.

Before the road trip started, I was thinking that if we went .500 over the ten games, I’d have to call it a success.   Unfortunately, that seems optimistic at this point and as good as the Mets looked for a stretch there I have that gut feeling that they are going to look twice as bad over the next few games.
